Abstract

The dichloromethane extract of the combined bark and heartwood of Myristica castaneifolia A. Gray ( Myristicaceae ) has yielded a new arylalkanone, named castanone (1), two structurally related, open-chain arylalkanones (2) and (3), and three benzofuranoid neolignans (4)-(6). The known antibacterial activity of the neolignans accounts for the antidiarrhoeal property of M. castaneifolia.
