The chloro and bromo complexes of iridium(III) and iridium(IV). I. Preparation

Abstract

The chloro and bromo salts A₂ [IrX₆] (A = K, NH₄, Rb, Cs; X = Cl, Br), A₃ [IrCl₆].H₂O (A = K, NH₄, Rb, Cs), A₃ [IrCl₆] (A = K, NH₄), A₂ [IrCl₅H₂O] (A = Rb, CS), (H₃O)K₈- [IrBr₆]₃.9H₂O, A₃ [IrBr₆].H₂O (A = NH₄, Rb, CS), A₃ [Ir₂C1₉] (A = Rb, CS), A₃ [Ir₂Br₉] (A = Rb, Cs, Me₄N) and [Co(NH₃)₆] [IrX₆] (X = Cl, Br) have been prepared and the various reaction paths studied. The ready oxidation of Ir^III to Ir^IV and the equilibrium between Ir^III monoiridium and diiridium bromo species means many reactions give a mixture of complexes.
