Complexes of carbohydrates with metal cations. XII. 2,5-Anhydroallitol and 2,5-anhydrogalactitol

Abstract

The compounds mentioned in the title were synthesized from 2,5-anhydro- D-glucitol. 2,5-Anhydrogalactitolforms complexes with cations involving the two hydroxyl groups in the ring and the ring-oxygen atom; 2,5-anhydroallitol does not form such complexes. The reaction of cis-(2,5- dihydrofuran-2,5-diyl)dimethyl dibenzoate (5) with iodine and silver acetate was found to be unusual, hydroxylation occurring from the unhindered side.
