Synthesis of emodin methyl ethers

Abstract

Procedures are summarized for the conversion of emodin (1) into all possible mono- and di-methyl ethers. The 1-methyl ether (2) is characterized for the first time. The 1- and 8-methyl ethers are differentiated by small differences in the chemical shifts of appropriate aromatic protons of their respective 6-benzoates.
