The basic methanolysis of some substituted 4'-nitrobenzanilides

Abstract

Rate constants for the basic methanolysis of ArCONHC₆H₄NO_2-p in methanol at 333 K are reported. When allowance is made for substrate ionization, a linear Hammett plot (p 1.88) is obtained. The very low substituent effect on rate observed previously for this reaction in acetone- methanol is shown to be due to omission of any correction factor for extensive ionization.
