Synthesis of some derivatives of Benz[a]acridine and Benz[c]acridine

Abstract

The base-catalysed reaction between o-aminobenzaldehyde and naphthalene-1,3-diol gave benz[a]acridin-5-ol which was converted into 5-methoxy-7-methylbenz[a]-acridone. The structure of the latter was established by N.M.R. spectroscopy.     Some previous reports on the synthesis of benz[a]acridine and benz[a]acridin-5-ol from o-nitrobenzyl chloride and of benz[c]acridone by the Tanasescu reaction have been confirmed.
