Effect of different gases on the intensity of the air after-glow

Abstract

The dependence of the intensity of the air after-glow on the nature of the bulk gas (for fixed O and NO concentrations) has been evaluated for H₂, He, N₂, O₂, Ar, CH₄, CO₂, N₂O, SF₆. The results are interpreted in terms of the combined effects of the collision partner on vibrational stabilization and electronic quenching of the emitting molecule.
