Synthetic evidence for the structure of xanthorrhone

Abstract

Reaction of 5,7-dimethoxyflavanone with sodium borohydride gives the flavanol, which condenses in the presence of acid with phloroglucinol to give (III), and with (-)-pinocembrin to give a small yield of a substance indistinguishable in its mass spectrum from xanthorrhone (I).
