Kinetics of Alkyl-oxygen Fission in Ester Hydrolysis: Tertiary Amyl and α-Methylallyl Esters

Abstract

The rates and Arrhenius parameters for the acid-catalysed hydrolyses of tertiary amyl 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoate and benzoate and α-methylallyl 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoate, benzoate, and acetate in aqueous acetone imply that reaction occurs by mechanism A_ALl for the former group and that a transition from mechanism A_ALl to A_AC2 occurs between the benzoate and acetate in the latter series.
