Abstract

Electrical conductances of methanolic solutions of a number of salts, picric acid, and hydrobromic acid hare been measured to 3000 atm at 25 °C. Two mechanisms, proton transfer and movement of CH3OH2+ ions, contribute to the conductance of H+ ions in methanol. Some suggestions concerning the proton transfer mechanism in both water and methanol at high pressure are made. The data have also been used to calculate the ionization constant, free energy, and molal volume change of ionization of picric acid in methanol to 3000 atm.
