The Alkaloids of Senecio jacobaea L. III. The structure of Jaconecic Acid

Abstract

Oxidation of jaconecic acid by nitric acid yields four acid products, which have been separated by a combination of partition chromatography on silica gel, and paper chromatography. Two of these fragments have been identified as αβ-dimethylmalic acid and oxalic acid, whilst the other two are dibasic acids having the formulae C₉H₁₄O₆ and C₉H₁₂O₇. These findings support the structure previously assigned to jaconecic acid.
