Don McNaughton is Professor of Molecular Sciences and Director of the Centre of Biospectroscopy based in the School of Chemistry, Monash University. After completing a Ph.D. in microwave spectroscopy of transient species at Monash University and an SERC post-doctoral fellowship at Sussex University, UK, in transient species and astrochemistry, he was appointed to the academic staff at Monash Chemistry in 1988. There, he has pursued interests in high resolution infrared spectroscopy and more recently in the area of biospectroscopy. His current major program of research involves developing Raman and infrared microspectroscopy and imaging techniques to understand and follow biological processes and disease at a molecular level in cells and tissue. He also runs a program aimed at generating and studying, by high resolution spectroscopy techniques, species of interest in understanding interstellar and atmospheric chemistry.

Bayden Wood is an ARC QEII Fellow and senior researcher at the Centre for Biospectroscopy, School of Chemistry Monash University. He completed his Ph.D. in 1999 at Monash University in biomedical applications of FTIR spectroscopy under the supervision of Professor Don McNaughton. He undertook a post-doctoral position at Hunter College New York in 2001 and as a Humboldt Fellow worked at ISAS (Dortmund, Germany) and the Robert Koch Institute (Berlin, Germany). His current research interests include developing vibrational diagnostic and monitoring tools for malaria, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. His other research interests include investigating the photophysical properties of haems using Raman-based modalities, including tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).

Abstract

This paper reviews work carried out in the Centre for Biospectroscopy, Monash University, at the Infrared Microspectroscopy Beamline on the Australian Synchrotron since the first synchrotron light. It discusses the attributes and advantages of the beamline for chemical spectroscopy and imaging of cellular and tissue samples and briefly summarizes new techniques that will come online in the near future.
