Covers the 248 native and 10 non-native frog and toad species found in Australia.

Throughout much of the world, frog populations are declining, with the survival of many species under threat. In Australia, several species have become extinct in the past 35 years. + Full description

This second edition of Field Guide to the Frogs of Australia provides fully updated accounts of all the known frogs of Australia. There are 248 species within the five native frog families: Hylidae, Limnodynastidae, Microhylidae, Myobatrachidae and Ranidae. Also included are the introduced Cane Toad and nine ‘stowaway’ species that have arrived in Australia.

Each species account includes details of size, status, distribution, habitat, behaviour and advertisement call. Species are beautifully illustrated with full-colour paintings and distribution maps are also included. Closely related frogs are shown in identical poses so that comparisons can be made readily. The introductory section of the book covers frog biology and habitats and includes notes on families and genera.

Mike Tyler passed away in March 2020. It was our great pleasure to work with Mike, and just before his passing we asked this herpetological hero how his passion for frogs started, and to tell us some of the highlights of his career: Talking Frogs With Mike Tyler

Reviews

"This guide will remain a fitting testament to his [Mike Tyler's] massive contribution to Australian froggery. That alone is a good enough reason to buy it."
Ian Fraser's Natural History Reviews #28, April 2020

"This book is the go-to field guide for Australian frogs. In keeping with the first edition, all images are hand drawn by Frank Knight. There are excellent photographic guides for some states, including Queensland, but this book is the most comprehensive nationwide."
Deborah Metters, Land for Wildlife South East Queensland 14(4), November 2020

"This is a true field guide – its physical size makes it attractive for field use: it is 230 × 148 mm and just over 200 pages, ideal to keep in a vehicle glovebox or a daypack. [...] One thing that stands out is that, instead of using photographs of frogs, the species are illustrated by Knight’s paintings. And what paintings they are! Each is not only technically accurate in form, proportions and colour, it is also beautiful."
Nick Clemann, Victorian Naturalists #139(1), February 2022
