A hypothesis of oxidative phosphorylation, and ion transport, in mito-chondria is proposed in which reduction and contraction of a respiratory electron-carrier complex is considered to result in mechanicochemical synthesis, within a membrane, of a thioester crosslink and release of a membrane weak base B:
