History

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Australian Academy of Science [external link] have enjoyed a relationship since the mid-20th century to cooperate and publish the CSIRO-owned journals of scientific research. The scholarly journals are published by CSIRO Publishing, an editorially independent not-for-profit business unit of CSIRO.

This agreement is renewed every five years and, in 2024, CSIRO and the Academy signed a new agreement to continue publishing together for five more years to 2029.

This latest version of the Agreement recognizes the joint commitment of CSIRO and the Academy in advocating and advancing open science, and the importance of diversity and inclusion.

Purpose

Through this agreement, CSIRO and the Academy have committed to championing Australia’s contribution to the international science research effort and to ensuring best practice ethical standards in peer review, thereby preserving the integrity of science.

A Board of Standards is formed through this agreement, whose purpose is to ensure excellent editorial policy and procedures for CSIRO Publishing Journals in accordance with the COPE guidelines. It also endeavours to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas relevant to scholarly publishing as well as foster and develop editorial skills of the Board of Standards’ membership through training and professional support.
