Abstract

The 'picture-wing' species of the genus Monohelea form a distinctive and readily recognizable group of the Ceratopogonidae, and they make up the majority of described forms of this genus. In the only study of the Australian species of Monohelea previously published, three species were listed, none of them having patterned wings. The New Guinea species have recently been studied by Tokunaga; all of the eight new species he has described have 'picture-wings'. In the present paper, 18 new 'picture-wing' species are described from the Australia-New Guinea area, and additional information is provided for some of Tokunaga's species.
