Abstract

Eighteen Australian subgenera of the genus Hylaeus Fabr. are recognized and keyed. Two of them (Laccohylaeus and Planihylaeus) are new and two others (Analastoroides Rayment and Hylaeorhiza Michener) were previously accorded generic rank. Fifteen of these taxa are revised, with recognition of 47 species including six new ones: H. (Hylaeteron) murrumbidgeanus, H. (H.) riekianus, H. (Planihylaeus) daviesiae, H. (P.) jacksoniae, H. (P.) probligenatus and H. (Xenohylaeus} desertoris. All species are described, most are figured and their distributions mapped. Keys for identification are also provided. The following are new synonyms: H. gracilicaudis Cockerell, 1929, and H. perconstrictus Ckll, 1929 = H. chrysaspis (Ckll, 1910); Prosopis indicator Ckll, 1910 and Euprosopis elegans var. butleri Rayment, 1930 = H. dromedarius (Ckll, 1910); P. basalis Friese, 1924 = H. disjunctus (Ckll, 1905); E. nodosicornis Ckll, 1913, and P. rubripes Friese, 1924 = H. elegans (Smith, 1853); P. simillima Smith, 1879, P. chrysognatka Ckll, 1910, P. leucospkaera Ckll, 1913, P. xantkosphaera Ckll, 1913, P. daveyi Ckll, 1921, and P. maculiceps Friese, 1924 = H. konestus (Smith, 1879); P. cognata Smith, 1879, and H. gosfordensis Rayment, 1939 = H. violaceus (Smith, 1853); P. cyaniventris Friese, 1924 = H. amatus (Ckll, 1909); P. packygnatka Ckll, 1910 = H. cyanurus (Kirby, 1802); H. amatiformis Ckll, 1929, and H. perconvergens Michener, 1965 = H. obtusatus (Smith, 1879); P. metallica Smith, 1862, and P. vicina Sichel, 1867 = H. perplexus (Smith, 1854); P. aposuara Ckll, 1910 = H. rotundiceps (Smith, 1879); P. fulvicornis Smith, 1853, P. purpurata Smith, 1879, P. cassiae Ckll, 1910, and P. kalamundae Ckll, 1915 (a valid subspecies) = H. ruficeps (Smith, 1853); P. albipes Friese, 1924 = H. albonitens (Ckll, 1905); Gnatkoprosopis kackeri Ckll, 1912, and G. simpliciventris Ckll, 1922 = H. amiculiformis (Ckll, 1909); P. asinella Ckll, 1913, G. rowlandi Ckll, 1914 and G. xantkocollaris Rayment, 1935 = H. amiculus (Smith, 1879); G. aureopicta Ckll, 1929, G. nigritarsus Rayment, 1929, G. borchii Rayment, 1935, and G. millariella Rayment, 1953 = H. bituberculatus (Smith, 1879); P. eburniella Ckll, 1912 = H. philoleucus (Ckll, 1910); H. spryi Ckll, 1926, and H. simillimus var. tasmani Ckll, 1929 = H. nubilosus (Smith, 1853); P. pulckricrus Ckll, 1915 = H. semirufus (Ckll, 1914); P. nigropersonata Ckll, 1910 = H. cyanophilus (Ckll, 1910); P. hobartiana Ckll, 1905, G. marianella Rayment, 193 1, and G. striata Rayment, 1935 = H. quadriceps (Smith, 1879); P. melanops Ckll, 1916 = H. trilobatus (Ckll, 1910); H. gibbonsi Ckll, 1929 = H. kelvini (Ckll, 1912); H. rieki Michener, 1965 = H. leptospermi (Ckll, 1922).
