Abstract
The second part of this revision covers the tribe Scarabaeini, comprising only the subtribe Canthonina in Australia. Observations are presented on biogeographical distribution, faunal relationships, behaviour, food preferences, and flightlessness.Sixteen genera and 94 species are described and keyed, of which three genera and 52 species are new. The genera Epilissus Keiche and Panelus Lewis, previously recorded as Australian, are shown not to occur here, while two genera previously unknown in Australia. Ignambia Heller and Lepanus Balthasar, are shown to be present. The new generic names proposed are Boleloscapter, Aptenucanthorz, and Diorygopyx. One genus, Heterouteuchus Paulian, is newly synonymized with Paraclzorius Arrow.
The new specific names proposed are: Aulatvpris maximus, Amphistornus inerrnis, A. pygnzaeus, A. cornplanatus, A. sppeculifer, A. tuberosus, A. accidatus, A. palpebratus, A. prinzonactus, A. pectorali, A. opacus, A. macphersonensis, A. montanus, A. stoveyi, A. trispiculatus, A. cunninghamensis, Labroma umbratilis, Tesserodon tenebroides, T. pilierepus, T. granulatum, Boletoscapter furcatus, Aptenocanthon rossi, Ignambia rnimerops, I. squamata, Lepanus monteithi, I. latheticus, L. australis, L. nitidus, L. palumensis, L. gelasinus, L. furcifer, L. parapiwnhe, L. villosus, L. vestitus, I. occidentalis, L. glaber, L. illawarrensis, L. arator, Sauvagesinella palustris, Diorygopyx cuspidatus, D. asciculifer, D. duplodentatus, D. niger, D. incrassatus, D. simpliciclunis, D. incomptus, Temnoplectron bornemisszai, T. laevigatum, T. disruptum, T. involucre, T. aeneopiceum, and T. subvolitans.
The following ten specific names a x newly synonymized (the synonym first): Cephalodesmius magnini Paulian and teissieri Paulian = C. laticollis Pascoe; C. minor Blackburn = C. armiger Westwood; Canthonosoma planum Sharp = C. mastersi Macleay; Amphistomus aeneopiceus Waterhouse = A. calcaratus Maclcay; Monoplistes lucidus Macleay = M. occidentalis Macleay; Temnoplectron reyi Paulian = T. politulum Macleay; Ifeteroateuchus oberthuri Paulian = Parachorius globusus Arrow; Epilissus sydneyensis Paulian = Ceocanthon politus Harold.
Eleven previously described species are transferred to other genera, as follows: Cephalodesmius cornutus Macleay to Boletoscapter, gen. nov.; Panelus hopsoni Carter to Aptenocanthon, gen. nov.; Epilissus ustulatus and E. globulus Macleay to Lepanus Balthasar; Panelus bidentatus Wilson, P. dichrous Gillet, P. pygmaeus Macleay, P. pisoniae Lea, and P. politus Carter to Lepanus Balthasar; Tesserodon becki Paulian to Sauvagesinella Paulian; Temnoplectron tibiale Macleay to Diorygopyx, gen. nov.
