Abstract
Kyrgyzstan, located in the north eastern region of Central Asia, is struggling to emerge economically and psychologically from the demise of the Soviet system. Inexperience in the processes of the market economy is making it difficult for Kyrgyzstan to undertake its obligations and responsibilities under the World Trade Organisation and derive benefits. There is a need for a change in the Kyrgyz approach to livestock production, management and marketing in order to promote participation in world trade and produce much needed foreign exchange. Kyrgyzstan presents some interesting animal production and agricultural issues, which are briefly described in this paper. Keywords: Kyrgyzstan, GTZ, Gissar, Gissarskay, photoperiod, yak
