PRESSURES FOR COMPETING USES OF THE NORTH WEST PASTORAL LANDS OF AUSTRALIA M.D. Young CSIRO Divisionof Land Resources Management, Deniliquin, N.S. W. 2 71 0. Abstract Some Aboriginal, conservationist, mining and urban people are placing pressures on politicians and administrators to alter the nature and extent of land use in northern Australia. This paper identu3es some of the legislative and administrative changes which could arise from these and future pressures. Consideration is given to pastoralists' political strength, the growth of the mining and tourist industries, possible changes in the position of Aboriginals and possible changes in the grazing rights of pastoralists. It is suggested that in the future more people will attempt to influence the way pastoral lands are used and that increased demands for the more conservative land use practices and livestock management techniques will constrain pastoralists' activities.https://doi.org/10.1071/RJ9810149
