EpiReview: Cryptosporidiosis in NSW, 1990–2000

Abstract

Cryptosporidium parvum is an intracellular protozoan parasite that causes disease in humans and other mammals. It was first described in 1907, but was not shown to cause human illness until 1976. Transmission occurs by the faecal–oral route; consequently, person-to-person transmission can occur—especially between household members, sexual partners, and children in day-care. Animal-to-human transmission may occur, especially from farm animals.
