Abstract

The bird life of Lord Howe Island was investigated during four visits by McKean and other ornithologists between 1956 and 1963. Based on information thus obtained, and on that given by local and visiting naturalists over the past 14 years, the species recorded from the island now total 118. Indigenous landbirds and breeding seabirds comprise 22% of this total: the remaining birds are either migrants, vagrants or introduced species. The number of birds ringed between 1959 and 1963 was 14,661. comprising individuals of nine species. Results so far obtained from the banding programme, together with observations on the distribution and habits of certain species, are discussed.
