Abstract
Maximum likelihood estimates for rate of survival and the rate of exploitation from tag recoveries when fishing is not constant are represented. A numerical technique for maximizing the likelihood function is presented. In it, trial values of the death rate parameters are selected until a maximum, if one exists, is located. The variances of the estimates are obtained using the information matrix.
