Abstract

The Health Department of Western Australia held a seminar on endoscopy practice recently. Invited representatives met to discuss the findings of a survey sent to all endoscopy units in the state and to hear presentations on issues related to the practice of endoscopy. Issues discussed included:

• risk management;
• legal perspectives of practice;
• standards of practice;
• sedation;
• training;
• infection control in endoscopy, and
• rural hospital perspectives.

The survey highlighted the need to standardise practice in endoscopy units in the state, with a working party formed to undertake this task.
