Abstract
The appointment of an infection control liaison nurse (ICLN), particularly in specialised areas such as the operating theatre (OT), can make a significant contribution to the infection control program. That nurse's value can be demonstrated when specific changes to infection control practices are proposed. Following the introduction of standard precautions in a 560-bed adult teaching hospital, the OT ICLN identified that some nursing staff were not complying with the guidelines on standard precautions. A specific policy for OT staff was therefore formulated, and focused on OT procedures in relation to the appropriate use of protective clothing and prevention of sharps injuries. This paper describes the role of the ICLN in the implementation of standard precautions in the OT. A variety of strategies were used, including educational sessions, an infection control questionnaire and a role play.https://doi.org/10.1071/HI99107
