Abstract
On Tuesday, 15 October 1996, the Illawarra Area Health Service in NSW was fined $4000 after the Chief Industrial Magistrate's Court found the service had failed to provide adequate supervision to ensure a hospital assistant was not subjected to potential needlestick injury on four separate occasions between 24 January and 30 July 1994. This paper discusses the history surrounding this precedent case, the findings of the magistrate and the strategies that have been undertaken to continually improve compliance with protocols regarding the correct handling of contaminated sharps.https://doi.org/10.1071/HI98114
