Abstract

There exist two main schools of thought about the concept of entropy, based on either Shannon's absolute entropy or Kullback's relative entropy. The application of the former in seismic deconvolution has been well known for twenty years, and the application of the latter has been growing in recent years as various minimum entropy deconvolution (MED) methods have been developed. Two of the major drawbacks of the conventional Shannon-based deconvolution method are the minimum-phase assumption and the lack of control of the output amplitude distribution, whereas the existing MED methods usually involve iterative calculations which require a large calculation effort.
