Synthesis and N.M.R. Study of 1-, 2- and 6-Trifluoromethylazulene

Abstract

The preparation of 1-, 2- and 6-trifluoromethylazulenes by a modified Burton reaction employing sodium trifluoroacetate is described. By the same method 1- and 2-trifluoromethylnaphthalenes have been made. The ¹H and ¹³C n.m.r. spectra have been assigned on the basis of ¹⁹F/¹H and ¹⁹F/¹³C coupling, by ¹H/¹³C correlation, and by prediction based on estimated substituent effects.
