Abstract
The 5-substituted phenylglyoxylic esters (3) and amides (4) have been prepared via the corresponding 1,1′-oxalylbisisatins (2). The nickel(11) macrocyclic amide complexes (7) have been prepared but the related ester complexes (5) were found to undergo deesterification (hydrolysis and decarboxylation) to provide a convenient route to the proto-complexes (6).
