Spectroscopic Studies on Some Pyridine and Morpholine Adducts of (meso-Tetraphenylporphyrin)Chromium(III) Chloride

Abstract
Infrared, electronic and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic data are reported for a series of ( meso-tetraphenylporphyrin )chromium(III) chloride adducts: Cr( tpp ) ClL , where L = pyridine, 2-picoline, 4- picoline , 2,6-lutidine, 4-cyanopyridine and morpholine . The data are interpreted in terms of increased symmetry of the porphinato moiety upon metallation and changes to the metal electronic environment resulting from the inductive and steric effects of the axial base- ligand L. A correlation is shown to exist between the EF/b(Cr 2p3/2) binding energy and the band I electronic transition energy for these complexes, which quantifies the influence of the base- ligand L on the electronic environment of the coordinated metal.
