Abstract
Reaction of acetic anhydride- perchloric acid with 3-oxoolean-12-en-29- oic acid (4) gave either the enol acetate (6) or the derived γ- pyrono compound (8). The structure assigned to the latter was confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray structure determination. Comment is made on doubts about this reaction as a method of structure assignment.
