The reaction of N-dichloromethylene-N,N-diethylammonium chloride with some carbohydrate alcohols and diols

Abstract

An improved synthesis of N-dichloromethylene-N,N-diethylammonium chloride is reported, and some reactions with various carbohydrate alcohols and diols are compared with those employing the usual N-dichloromethylene-N,N-dimethylammonium chloride (Viehe's salt). A decreased reactivity of the diethyl salt is noted, with some interesting repercussions.
