Abstract
The cyclic iminium salts derived from N-dichloromethylene-N,N-dimethylammonium chloride (Viehe's salt) and a variety of acyclic, cyclic and rigid bicyclic vicinal carbohydrate diols have been heated. The products of such thermolysis are chloro carbamates, formed by diaxial ring-opening of the intermediate cyclic iminium salts.
