The protonation of 2,4-, 3,4- and 2,4,5-Polyalkylphenols in fluorosulfonic acid

Abstract

The protonations of 2,4- and 3,4-dialkylphenols and 2,4,5- trialkylphenols and anisoles, where the alkyl groups are ethyls or methyls, have been examined for fluorosulfonic acid solutions at -50°. These investigations show that in these systems C4-protonation ipso to an ethyl group occurs more readily than protonation ipso to a methyl group.
