Abstract
The activity coefficients of NaCl in the ternary system NaCl-DL- alanine-H2O have been measured at 298.15 K by the e.m.f. method with sodium-ion-selective glass electrodes. Measurements were made over the concentration range 0.1-6.0 mol kg-1 NaCl and 0.1-1.0 mol kg-1 DL- alanine. The dipole moment of DL-alanine was found to be 12.3 D from Kirkwood's equations. The difference in behaviour between DL-alanine and β-alanine in a similar system is also discussed.
