Abstract
The effect of added benzene on the yield and decay rate of the solvated electron in liquid methanol, ethanol and propan-1-ol has been investigated by pulse-radiolysis. The optical transition energyof es- is independent of mixture composition, but the decay rate increases and the G(es-) value decreases with increasing benzene concentration. The nature of the electron trap and the mechanism ofelectron solvation in the alcohols is apparently unaltered by the presence of aromatic hydrocarbon. The results are interpreted in terms of electron reactions with the scavenger before, and after, solvation.https://doi.org/10.1071/CH9741129
