Abstract
Two methods of preparing monocyclopentadienyltitanium(III) carboxylates of general formula cpTi(O2CR)2 (cp = π-cyclopentadienyl; R = CF3, CH3, CH2CH3, CH2CH2CH3, C6H5) have been investigated. Although titanium(III) has the configuration 3d,1 the green or brown dimers are virtually diamagnetic. The diamagnetism probably arises from a superexchange interaction between titanium atoms through the π-system of the carboxylate bridges although the possibility of some direct metal-metal interaction cannot be excluded at this stage. Spectroscopic data are reported for all compounds. Bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium(III) carboxylates of general formula cp2Ti(O2CR) (R = H, CH3, CH2CH3) were formed when cpTi(O2CR)2 were vacuum sublimed at c. 180°C.https://doi.org/10.1071/CH9730941
