Inter-ring proton couplings in naphthalene

Abstract

The nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of 1,3,5,7- and 1,3,6,8- tetradeutero-naphthalenes have been examined at 60 MHz with simultaneous ¹H-{²H} spin decoupling. Analysis of the spectra has yielded the following values for the interring coupling constants in naphthalene : J_1,5 = | 0.8₃|; J_1,6 = -0.1₆; J_1,7 = + 0.2₁ and J_2,6 = | 0.2₈| Hz. The signs of J_1,6 and J_1,7 have been determined relative to J_1,3.
