Further experiments with the methylquinolizidines and their methiodides

Abstract

The synthesis of 4-methylquinolizidine has been re-examined, and the purity of methylquinolizidines used in earlier work established by gas chromatography. A new synthesis of the cis-fused methiodide of quinolizidine has been devised, and the course of the Hofmann degradation of it and its stereoisomer examined. The stereochemical course previously deduced for the quaternization of the 1-methylquinolizidines has been confirmed by experiments with optically active specimens of these compounds.
