Abstract
A rigorous thermodynamic method is used to derive the equation for calculating the surface tension from the data obtained with a vertical-plate balance using a smooth, rigid plate. The effect of tilting the plate is discussed and equations are derived for plates with regular vertical and horizontal grooves. The validity of measurements made with a roughened plate is also discussed.https://doi.org/10.1071/CH9640007
