The structure of cryptopleurine and Hofmann degradation of some quinolixidine alkaloids

Abstract

With the help of (-)-cryptopleurine-(¹⁴C)-methiodide it has been shown that during attempted Hofmann degradation no structural change takes place. Therefore, the structure of the alkaloid cryptopleurine is I. The formation of racemic quaternary methiodides under conditions which usually effect Hofmann degradation is discussed.
