Barbaloin. I. Some observations on its structure

Abstract

The reactions of barbaloin are shown to be consistent with the formula C₂₁H₂₄O₉. It is suggested on the basis of absorption spectra and published data that the molecule contains an aloe-emodinanthrone ring system which cannot enolize to form the anthranol.
