Abstract

The depside 3-chloro-4-O-demethylmicrophyllinic acid [4-{3′-chloro-2′,4′-dihydroxy-6′-(2′″-oxoheptyl)benzoyl-oxy}benzoic acid] (2) has been isolated from the lichen Hypotrachyna leiophylla together with atranorin, chloroatranorin and 4-O-demethylmicrophyllinic acid (1). The compound (2) was characterized as the corresponding p-nitrobenzyl ester, the structure of which followed from a combination of spectroscopic and degradative evidence.

Keywords: Depsides; Hypotrachyna leiophylla; nitrobenzyl esters, lichen metabolite.
