Fossil Banksieae From Yallourn, Victoria, With Notes on the Morphology and Anatomy of Living Species

Abstract

The morphological and anatomical features of six types of fossil leavesfrom brown coal at Yallourn, Victoria, have been described. Comparison withsimilar featUres of living species has shb-wnthat all are extinct members ofthe tribe Banksieae of the family Proteaceae. A new genus Banksieaephyllumhas been instituted to include these. fossil leaves. The suggestion has beenmade that the identification of fossil leaves with either Banksia or Dryandra isimpracticable.
