Studies on the Nitrogen Metabolism of Plants VIII. Utilization of a-Oximinocarboxylic Acids by Oat Plants

Abstract

Oat plants were grown in culture solutions containing hydroxylamine, oximinopropionic acid, trans-oximinosuccinic acid and cis- and trans-oximinoglutaric acids in different concentrations at pH 7. MorpholOgical changes and nitrogen contents, including protein-N contents, of these plants are described. It is shown that all these oximes can be utilized as a source of nitrogen for protein synthesis; optimum concentrations for protein synthesis in oats is about 1 x 1O-5M for hydroxylamine, 1 x 1O-4M for oximinopropionate and 1 x 1O-3M for the oximino-dicarboxylic acids.
