About the Editors-in-Chief
Dr Balwant Singh is Professor in Soil Chemistry at the Faculty of Agriculture & Environment at the University of Sydney. His teaching and research focuses on soil mineralogy and chemistry with environmental applications. He has extensive editorial experience being an author of over 150 publications and a regular reviewer for several international journals. He has co-edited two journal special issues and three conference proceedings/books including the highly-acclaimed ‘Synchrotron-based techniques in Soils and Sediments’.
He is an Associate Editor for the Clay Minerals, Applied & Environmental Science and Frontiers in Environmental Science journals. Balwant is an active member of several professional societies including the International Union of Soil Science, Australian Society of Soil Science, British Society of Soil Science, Clay Mineral Society, American Chemical Society and a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain. He is the Chair of the Soil Mineralogy Commission of International Union of Soil Science and a Councilor of the Association Internationale pour l’Etude des Argiles. Previously, he has served as a President of the Australian Clay Minerals Society and the Australian Society of Soil Science (NSW Branch).
Balwant has been the recipient of the George Brown Lecture Award of the Clay Minerals Groups of the Mineralogical Society (Great Britain), Marion L. and Chrystie M. Jackson Mid-Career Clay Scientist Award from the Clay Mineral Society and the Marion L. and Chrystie M. Jackson Soil Science Award from the Soil Science Society of America. He has been a Visiting Research Scientist at Purdue University and the University of Western Australia.

Dr Mark Tibbett is Professor of Soil Ecology at Reading University in England and an Adjunct Professor at Murdoch University. He previously worked for The University of Western Australia, CSIRO, Bournemouth University, the University of Leeds and the Water Research Centre; and has previously been an Adjunct Principal Research Fellow at James Cook University. His eclectic research portfolio includes soil microbiology, plant-soil interactions and feedbacks, rhizosphere, mycorrhizas, biogeochemistry, bioremediation, ecosystem reconstruction, and carbon, nutrient (especially phosphorus) and trace element cycling. He also has a long-term interest in forensic taphonomy. His research is supported by funding from research councils, the European Union, charities and industry partnerships.
Mark has considerable experience as an author having over 100 peer-reviewed publications to his name and is well cited internationally. He has extensive editorial experience having edited eight conference proceedings, two books and has previously been a Guest Editor for special issues of Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment (on Land Restoration) and Plant and Soil (Rhizosphere). This is coupled with ten years of experience as an Associate Editor for the journals Restoration Ecology and Australian Journal of Botany.
Mark is regularly invited to speak at international conferences and workshops and has been privileged to have given keynotes lectures and plenary addresses to a number of international symposia. He is a Council member of the British Society of Soil Science, a reviewer and panel member for numerous research bodies and actively participates in a number of professional societies.
