Ecology and Management of Wild Deer in Australia

Online Edition

The abundance and distribution of non-native deer in Australia is increasing. This comes with increased threats to human health, agricultural production and indigenous biodiversity. The 14 papers in this special issue of Wildlife Research provide new information about aspects of the ecology, impacts and management of wild deer in Australia. The methods and findings reported here are relevant to deer research, and management of deer, globally.

Monitoring wildlife

Online Edition

Recent advances in monitoring tools are providing valuable data on wildlife population trends and behaviours. This month’s issue of Wildlife Research presents research testing and employing a diverse range of approaches to monitoring wildlife. Studies use camera-trap and photo identification technology to monitor population trends, examine how individuals' responses to monitoring equipment might influence results and test the efficacy of non-invasive monitoring for studying carnivore movements.

Control and monitoring of invasive species

Online Edition

This month’s Special Issue is focused on the problem of invasive species and their control. Invasive species can cause a wide variety of problems but, here, the main focus is on species with potential to harm the environment. The papers address methods for the effective control of a range of vertebrate and invertebrate species, as well as the vexed issue of monitoring those species even at the low abundances that result from eradication programmes.

Human–wildlife interactions

Online Edition

This month’s Special Issue has a focus on resolving substantive problems that can arise through various forms of interaction between humans and wildlife. The papers address both wildlife impacts on humans – for example, bird strike on aircraft and predation on livestock – and humans on wildlife, such as research activities, legal harvest and poaching.

Predator–prey interactions

Online Edition

Predators can play pivotal roles in ecosystems through their interactions with prey populations. Thus, exploration of their relationships with prey are crucial to a comprehensive understanding of ecosystem dynamics, particularly in the face of ongoing predator declines and, in some cases, recoveries. This Special Issue comprises six papers highlighting cutting-edge predator detection methods, examining the means by which predators capture prey, and quantifying their impacts on prey populations.
