Abstract

The Australian and New Guinea fauna of the large and striking insectivorous Ceratopoponidae of the tribes Heteromyiini and Sphaeromiini is poorly described, until 1966 numbering only 11 recorded species belonging to eight genera. In 1966 a revision of the New Gumea fauna added 17 new species. The present paper adds a further 32 species, belonging to nine genera of which three, Crispomyia, Lanatomyia and Leehelea, are new. Additional information on some previously recorded species is also provided, and some aspects of the breeding biology of certain species are discussed.
