Abstract

A morphometric study of the mosses Breutelia pendula (Sm.) Mitt. and B. elongata (Hook.f. & Wilson) Mitt. was conducted in order to investigate the species delimitation between these two species, and to ascertain the status of B. elongata in Australia, in particular Victoria. As a result, B. elongata is no longer considered to occur in continental Australia. Useful characters to distinguish between the newly circumscribed species include the size of the marginal teeth, whether or not the alar cells are inflated, the leaf width and the set of the leaves. Bartramia crassa Hook.f. & Wilson, which was previously considered a synonym of B. elongata, is synonymised with B. pendula.

Acknowledgements

The data for this morphometric study were collected during a Jim Willis summer studentship by HJ. We thank Roger Riordan and the Cybec Foundation for funding the Jim Willis studentship. Furthermore we thank Dr Allan Fife and Scott Gilmore for making available their unpublished treatments of Breutelia for the floras of New Zealand and Australia respectively. We thank the directors of the following herbaria, ADT, BM, CANB, H, MELU, and NY, for promptly processing our loan requests for material that, together with collections from MEL, formed the basis of this study. Constructive comments on earlier versions of the manuscript by Drs Tom May and Frank Udovicic and two anonymous reviewers are gratefully acknowledged.
