Volume 74 Number 15 2023

The chemical composition of 43 small waterbodies sampled for the first time near Casey Station and adjacent islands in Antarctica is provided. There is concordance between the local bedrock lithologies and some of the water ionic ratios. There is a strong indication that marine aerosols have also contributed to some water ratios such as Na/Cl and Cl/Br. Phosphate and nitrate concentrations are very high in waters near penguin rookeries.

MF22270Response of true limpet Patella aspera (Patellogastropoda) pediveliger larvae to a range of settlement cues

Diego Castejón 0000-0003-1981-0268, Loreto García, Natacha Nogueira and Carlos A. P. Andrade
pp. 1296-1313

Crustose coralline algae were a reliable positive control for limpet settlement and might represent recruitment sites for the limpets in the wild. Contrary to previous suggestions, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) was a weak inducer of settlement for Patella aspera larvae. The diatom Navicula salinicola and the pharmacological agents acetylcholine, IBMX and KCl did not trigger a settlement response in Patella aspera larvae. The restrictive settlement requirements of P. aspera may explain the traditional difficulty in obtaining limpet post-larvae under culture conditions.

We found strongly limited gene flow, leading to significant genetic structuring of Oryzias javanicus population across the Indonesian Archipelago. The highly significant genetic structure evident between all sampled populations of the target species east and west of the Wallace Line adds weight to the previous recognition of the impact that this barrier has to disperse a wide variety of marine organisms across Wallacea.

MF23100Numerical modelling for ecologically successful spawning-site restoration in Chin-sha River, China

Yuqian Xi, Pengcheng Li, Xiaolan Pang, Yu Han, Junqiang Lin, Qianqian Wang, Yike Li and Weiwei Yao 0000-0003-1050-9188
pp. 1324-1339

This study examined the influence of dam construction on the fish spawning site of the Chin-sha River. An integrated model combining hydro-morphodynamic and habitat modules was employed to evaluate the ecological condition. The results indicated poor ecological conditions under the current hydrological conditions. Implementing restoration strategies such as side-channel addition and riverbank reconstruction can significantly enhance habitat and elevate the overall suitability index. The study showcased the viability and advantages of employing the side-channel addition restoration strategy.

MF23054Quantifying the accessibility of sustainable seafood in south-eastern Queensland, Australia

Tia Vella 0000-0002-6689-4292, Leslie Roberson, Caitie Kuempel and Carissa Klein
pp. 1340-1354

Australia has rigorous fisheries management policies and strives to produce sustainable seafood. However, it difficult for consumers to know whether the seafood products they consume are sustainable because the majority is imported or has insufficient labelling. We assessed the sustainability of over 52 000 seafood products in south-eastern Queensland, Australia, and found that sustainable seafood was not widely available.
